Department of Science and Technology Studies
About Us
From our humble beginnings as the Unit for the
History and Philosophy of Science, way back in
1976 under the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of
Science, we are now a full-fledged department
offering both undergraduate and postgraduate
programmes. The department was first established
in 1997, when the University Senate gave its
approval for the setting up of the department. The teaching approach of the undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes offered by the
Department of Science and Technology Studies
combines the conservative with the innovative.
Here we attempt to combine the history and
philosophy of science, sociology of science and
technology (S&T), the economics of S&T, and S&T
policy studies, in order to forge a
multi-disciplinary perspective on S&T studies,
which is holistic but equally pragmatic. Such a
versatile and innovative approach, it is hoped,
would provide students with the necessary
resources to face a challenging working
environment after graduation. Our programmes
are structured in such a way as to allow
students to acquire a diversity of perspectives
on science and technology while maintaining
focus. Through a combination of lectures,
presentations, class discussions and guided
supervisions, students will find the courses
taught in the Department to be intellectually
stimulating as well as practical and useful. The first batch of undergraduate students who
enrolled in 1997, graduated in 2000. Since then,
we have been producing graduates annually
according to the figures given below:

Our students have managed to find
employment in both the private and public
sectors, such as SIRIM, MARDI, MOSTI, Department
of Standard, the Civil Service, and private
companies.Apart from the undergraduate programme, we also
offer degree courses at the Master’s and PhD
levels. We strive to continuously improve our
programmes through improvement in teaching
content, teaching methods and quality of staff.
Thus upon graduation, our students are equipped
with both the intellectual, professional and
communicative skills necessary to face a
challenging and competitive environment and job
market. We are a young organisation open to new ideas
and challenges. I am confident that both our
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes will
provide you with a solid foundation when you
embark on your future careers. With the support
of all my colleagues, we will try our best to
upgrade efforts towards making all the
programmes offered by the department successful
and beneficial for all.
