Department of Science and Technology Studies

Postgraduate Programmes

Our graduate programmes are aimed at equipping students with the necessary theoretical, analytical and empirical skills to address the future social, economic, technological, management and political challenges arising from rapid developments in science, technology and innovation.

The Masters degree (M.Sc.) programme is conducted by research as well as by COURSEWORK whilst the PhD programme is undertaken wholly by RESEARCH.

Coursework Programme

Masters of Science
(History of Science and Science and Technology Policy Studies)

1. About the programme
Two modules are offered under this programme, namely, History and Philosophy of Science and Science and Technology Policy and Management Studies. Among the course objectives are:
  • To examine the characteristics of science and technology and its relation to economy, industry, environment and society;
  • To provide an understanding of the historical and philosophical dimensions of science relevant to science policy;
  • To examine the social, intellectual and economic factors that influence the use (and abuse) of science and technology;
  • To provide the necessary conceptual and critical skills in science and technology management and planning.
2. Programme Overview
The course is organized in modular format. Candidates are required to do 26 credits of coursework, and a Research Project (10 credit hours), for a total of 36 credits. Students are required to take four Departmental Compulsory Courses (14 credits) from the core module and four Elective Courses (12 credits). For those pursuing the policy module, the list of elective courses has been recently expanded to include selected courses from the University’s MBA programme conducted by the Faculty of Business and Accountancy.

3. Special Features of the Programme
The only program of its kind in Malaysia, taught by lecturers who are competent in the subject, including by those outside the University, and who have had experience in the private sector.  In addition, students also have the option of taking elective courses from the University’s MBA program. The coursework provides a sound theoretical foundation, and equip students with conceptual and analytical skills in science policy, planning and management. The project paper provides an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during coursework, to a particular problem of the student’s choice. All in all, the course provides an excellent preparation for a career in S&T policy, planning and management.

4. Duration of Programme

Minimum: 3 Semesters / 1 years

Maximum: 10 Semesters / 5 years

The programme will be conducted over a minimum period of 12 months (or 3 semesters). In the first semester students register for three of the four compulsory core courses while in the second semester they complete the core courses and followed by elective courses as well as undertake preparations for their research project. The remaining period of the course is usually spent on the research project. Candidates normally submit the final report of the research project at the end of the 12-months period (or 3 semesters).

5. Entry Requirements

  • A Bachelor degree with Honours from the University of Malaya, or its equivalent from other universities
  • For overseas students, an additional English language requirement of an IELTS score of at least  5.0 or  a minimum TOEFL score of 550

6. Mode of Study

Coursework (26 credits) and project paper (10 credits)

Class sizes are typically small and the teaching style is interactive, with emphasis on student presentations, group work and discussions, case study analysis and problem-solving. Students will be assessed on three main elements: course-work, panel evaluation of research report and final examination. Coursework may include term papers, written case analysis, oral presentations, participation in class discussions and mid-semester examinations. In terms of overall assessment, 40% of the total marks for each course will be based on the final examination whilst the remaining 60% will be based on coursework performance. The apportionment of marks for coursework will be at the discretion of the course convener. The degree of M.Sc. (Philosophy of Science and Science and Technology Policy Studies) is awarded to a candidate who secures 36 credits or more, with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.00.
