Research Title :     Source of Funding : Project Leader :     Objectives of the Research :	Documenting Early Industry in Malaysia: Mapping Processes of Change and Development   Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) Assoc. Prof. Dr. K. Thiruchelvam kthiru@um.edu.my   ·          To ascertain and identify the origins of change and development, with particular focus          on the industrial sector, from the colonial into the post-independence eras;   ·          To document the evolution of social-economic transformation in Malaysia, from a largely subsistence agricultural economy to an extractive and primary commodity commercial export economy, transiting into an industrial and manufacturing entity, the phase before the current k-economy; and   ·          To contribute to a more complete and comprehensive picture of the processes of change in past eras for an understanding of how we arrive at the present, a fully fledged industrial nation.
Research Title :     Source of Funding : Project Leader :     Objectives of the Research :	A Study of Contemporary Issues Concerning, and the Current Status of, Science and Technology in the Islamic World   Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) Prof. Dr. Mohd Hazim Shah Abdul Murad drhazim@um.edu.my   ·          To compile information on S&T in the Islamic world from the Middle Ages to the present. 3 major periods will be covered: (i) medieval; (ii) colonial and (iii) Post-Colonial/Contemporary;   ·          To identify major issues concerning science and technology in the contemporary Islamic world, and attempts towards resolving them. For example issues on the environment, bioethics, and the discourse on Islamic science;   ·          To assess the status of S&T in the Islamic world, and to make international comparisons; and   ·          To provide an analysis of problems encountered by Muslim countries in their modernization attempts, through the medium of science and technology.
Research Title :     Source of Funding : Project Leader :     Objectives of the Research :	Empirical Studies on Animal Ethics Awareness among Researchers in Animal and Wildlife Studies   Penyelidikan Jangka Pendek (PJP) / Vote F Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Nurani Mohd Nor sitinuraninor@um.edu.my   ·         To investigate  awareness among scientific investigators (including scientists and students) of the concept of the Three Rs;   ·         To assess their awareness on animal ethics by allowing the respondent  to reflect upon real-life case  examples; and   ·          To make recommendations based on the study on the need to establish clear guidelines on procedures involving animal care and use in research by presenting a balanced position paper on the complex scientific and moral issues raised by animal experimentation.
Research Title :     Source of Funding : Project Leader :     Objectives of the Research :	Empirical Studies on the Utilisation of Participatory Agroecological Innovation for Sustainable Food and Nutrition Systems   Penyelidikan Jangka Pendek (PJP) / Vote F Dr. Amran Muhammad amran_sts@um.edu.my   ·          To explore the benefits of a participatory approach i.e. client-centered relationship in innovation and sustainability in science and technology through the multi/interdisciplinary perspectives of entrepreneurship, environment, ethics and epistemology;   ·          To investigate how the creation of a participatory agroecotechnopreneurial community which employs the participation of local capabilities and indigenous resources can make a significant contribution to the existence of the sustainable food and nutrition systems; and   ·          To propose a model for a participatory policy and management development through the applications of innovative and sustainable technology systems in other areas of science and technology undertakings i.e. water, energy, health, biodiversity, sanitation and waste management systems.
Research Title :     Source of Funding : Project Leader :     Objectives of the Research :	Technological Product and Process Innovation in Manufacturing Sector : The Case of Malaysia’s Small and Medium Sized Enterprises   Penyelidikan Jangka Pendek (PJP) / Vote F Ng Boon Kwee bkng@um.edu.my     ·          To ascertain the level of innovativeness in Malaysian SMEs in manufacturing sector;   ·          To gather, explore and analyze key problems and challenges in developing TPP innovation activities which are encountered by Malaysian SMEs in manufacturing sector; and   ·          To propose feasible innovation-related policies for the development of Malaysian SMEs in manufacturing sector.
