MOHD SALIM BIN MOHAMED
BSc (Biomedical sc) IIU, MSc (Malaya)

PhD Candicate, Fellow

Email: mohdsalim@um.edu.my

I am doing my PhD which concentrates in the field of medical ethics. I am currently working on my PhD research which concentrates on ethical decision making in medical practice in Malaysia which specifically exploring the ethical issues in Sex Assignment Surgery (SAS) for newborns with Disorders of Sex Development (DSDs). This research offers comprehensive knowledge pertaining to bioethics principles and practice which allow me to see this area with broader perspective, particularly from those pediatric experts who are directly dealing with newborns and children. This research is mainly focusing on pediatric ethics, where the subjects are newborns with Disorders of Sex Development (DSDs).  In this research, the issue of autonomy and the “authenticity” of informed consent have been questioned in the case of sex assignment surgery (SAS) to ‘normalize’ those newborns.

PhD Candicate, Fellow

My research title is Islamic Responses to Modernity: The Discourse on Islamic Science as a Case-study, and my field of research is history and philosophy of science. In my research, I study the philosophical image of modern science that contributes towards the mind-set of modernity. Perhaps it might be impossible to separate modern science from its popular and philosophical image which has in a sense, played a role in science and technology development through its influence on popular attitudes. Some of the characteristics of modernity include rational thinking, emphasis on physical development, a belief in science and its methods, and a belief in the idea of progress. In my research, the discourse on Islamic Science will be looked at both in terms of its institutional setting as well as individual contributions by outstanding and influential Muslim thinkers such as S.H. Nasr, Ismail Faruqi, Ziauddin Sardar and Syed Naquib al-Attas. The institutional setting will locate the institutional loci of the discourse, for example the International Institute of Islamic Thought in Virginia, USA, the Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC) in Malaysia, and Akademi Sains Islam Malaysia (ASASI).

NOR AISHAH BINTI ABDULLAH
BSc (Science and Technology Studies); MSc (Malaya)

PhD Candicate, Fellow

Email: aishah.abdullah@um.edu.my

My field of study is critical thinking. My research explores chess, a board game, as a tool to develop students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills. Using the California Critical Thinking Skills Test for pre-test and post-test, also observation during the programme, research data is analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. At the end of my research, I hope to show that playing chess should not regarded as hobby only, but it should be exploited for increasing child’s ability to think critically.
